Overview
Deep Brain Stimulation is a neurosurgical procedure involving the implantation of electrodes in specific areas of the brain. These electrodes deliver electrical impulses to regulate abnormal brain activity, primarily used for Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, and dystonia.
Procedure
Under MRI guidance, thin electrodes are implanted in targeted brain areas (such as the subthalamic nucleus or globus pallidus). A pulse generator (similar to a pacemaker) is implanted under the skin in the chest, connected to the brain electrodes via extension wires.
✅ Benefits
Significant reduction in tremors, Improved motor control, Reduced medication needs, Better quality of life, Adjustable and reversible therapy
⚠️ Risks
Infection, Bleeding in brain (rare), Lead migration, Device malfunction, Speech or balance issues (temporary)
🔄 Recovery
Hospital stay: 2-4 days. Programming sessions over 4-6 weeks. Full benefit realized within 3-6 months.
